I HAD A DREAM | A Thank You Speech | Dhiraj Sindhi

Hello, Readers' Fam! Welcome back to The Universe of My Secrets. So, a nearly a month ago I wrote a Thank You Speech (for my own fictional character) to submit it to a contest (There was a prompt actually that I cannot share), which turned out to nothing. Maybe I did it in so much hurry and casually. Now, I want to show it to you guys. Tell me what you think about it!

A Thank You Speech for receiving Life-Time Achievement Award

I HAD A DREAM

A very good evening to everyone!

Firstly, thank you, God, for making me worthy of this award. I dedicate this to my parents and my loved ones for I cannot be grateful enough. Thank you to all jury members for giving such prestigious award, I am truly obliged for this great honor. Thanks to my diligent team for working day and night before every album-launch that I could hold this award firmly on behalf of you all team members. Thanks to you, my audience for I am who I am because of you. You all had been an inevitable part of this journey to make my dream come true.

Yes. Certainly, I had a dream! I learned playing piano from my mother at the age of six. I loved to hear her play it everyday, she would take me to another world. I always dreamt of being like her, enrapturing everyone with her talent. She left this world very soon in my late childhood. Then, I knew how to play piano but never thought of it as a talent. Years passed by and I lived with one thought that I could never do better. When I was struggling in my teenage, my father reminded me of that dream. He used to quote Benjamin Franklin ─ ‘Hide not your talents, they for use were made, what’s a sundial in the shade?’ He believed in my talent when no one could see it. He encouraged me to carry on the legacy and fulfill my dream and said ‘You will do the best you can, with the talent you have.’ From that day until now, I’ve lived my dream of playing piano everyday, be it a concert-hall or be it my home, I never missed a day.

I wish they were here today to see me accepting this award. Mum. Dad. If you are listening to me, I love you.

Having a dream is vital to be alive in the sea of humanity. The tough task is to believe in them and keeping them alive with you. I had a mad dream of composing such music that would change my world and I didn’t give up. It just takes a smile to fight against all odds. I would thank myself for not losing hope when it was most likely for me to give up. In the future, I would count on every opportunity that would make myself better at what I do.

Once again, thanks to everyone, I am so grateful to have you all. Please, forgive me if I forgot to mention you. Thank you!

Have a nice time!

LAST SNEAK PEEK

The couturier takes out a rosewood colored, cotton thread reel from one of the containers and a big-eyed embroidery needle from the other one. She takes out bobbin from its case and winds the thread around, circles a few times and places the reel into spool pin. She slides the bobbin down through its hole into the needle and it dangles as she presses it against the machine pulley. Clanking noise pulsates across space as she depresses the treadle with her feet while holding the needle against the shiny metal of balance wheel. The moon shines down on the wall across the window, where hangs the painting of an Oxbow. She gazes at the wall when she fits the bobbin to its place under the machine bed. Grasping the thread between her thumb and the index finger, she elegantly takes it from one hole to another then half-wraps around tension assembly and then positions it onto thread take-up lever and finally inserts it into needle eye, which takes her barely a few seconds. She fumbles for once or twice while gathering pieces of clothes strewn across the large machine bed. After retrieving two satin rosewood robes, she puts them under the presser foot and drops the presser bar. Once again, clanking and thumping sound resonates and the sound continues until the sewn clothe completely trails out of the foot. She cuts the strands with shear and clutches the robe, taking yokes in her hands. She raises her hands in the air, relishing the beauty of her do-it-yourself prom dress. She rises to her feet and turns off the lamp as she walks past it. After a while, the lamp resurrects from death and it feels a little cozy as all the casements are shut closed. The silhouette comes into light, delighted. Wearing a wide valorous smile with the matching rosewood gown. Her thick black eyebrows are perfectly arched with a brow pencil and her eyelashes are curled and long. Adam’s apple is sorely visible at the front of her neck. Her thin and long lips are colored the same as her dress with lip gloss. She tries to walk the imaginary ramp animatedly but as the romantic melody begins to thrive somewhere near the room, she starts moving in all directions, dancing. She switches to free-spins and goes round and round endlessly on her toes. She only stops when she feels exhausted and flops into the chair, also music eventually stops. She completely forgets her moments of despair from just a few hours ago and turns crimson. She hesitates a bit before opening the windows and stands still at the window for a while like a mannequin, absorbing the fresh air. The crescent is fading away as the dawn is nearing. She strolls toward the door to find her heels uninjured and immediately slides her feet into it. She starts walking as if rehearsing for her ramp walk at some luxury-brand fashion week. She’s graceful and flawless at her imaginary ramp. A sudden crack booms in the room. One of those thin and long stilettos broke. She collapses to the floor, headlong. Screaming. So does her black haired wig. Screaming. Saving the eternal beauty of itself on the couturier’s head. Footsteps are approaching, getting louder as the sun rises. The couturier is out of senses, but manages to sit up. Now, that brightness is enhanced, the tiny bits of facial hair are easily noticeable. The dress is badly crumpled and looks very messy as the couturier, right now. Couturier gets up to change into the clothes lying beside. The door opens with the voice asking what happened to couturier, but both figures halt by the doorway the moment they see the couturier. One of them is the pianist. Tears streak down the couturier’s cheeks, but stands firmly without twitching eyes any further and looks straight into the man’s eyes.

“Father!”

“You are not my son anymore!”

The pianist leaves without a word and the father shuts behind the door on the way back. Never to open it again.

SNEAK PEEK 5

The pianist stands up and walks straight to the casement forcing it open wide; the fluorescent light gets scattered by dust particles in the dark outside. The chilly wind whizzes through the window brushing away from the pianist fills the room with cold air and he inbreathes the same salty fragrance of sea-shore. He turns back to his Steinway and settles down on his keyboard bench reassuring his position. The pianist is having caramel-colored hair reaching to his shoulders, styled in long textured waves. His hair swings back and forth then with a sudden gust of wind, falls into his face but he doesn’t care. His body shakes as he taps his toe on the stone floor up to six times and with the sixth hit, digs in his fingers onto black and white stripes of the keys. The music begins to throb the familiar tune that of Harald’s Dream. The armed force descends mountain from between the logging scars forming Hebrew letters that read Noah when viewed the right way up and reads Shaddai ─ “The Almighty” from heaven’s perspective. Unlike before, they do well enough to reach the bank of Connecticut River where it forms the Oxbow. Thunder strikes on the crags covered with undomesticated wilds in the foreground of the painting. There builds a cone-shaped cyclone under the dark long sheet of nimbus, but this time leaves fail to escape and stay intertwined in the course of twister. The force gathers at the Oxbow with their dark grey Scutum shields and constructs a wall holding them against the violent clouds. Soldiers climb on one another to make the wall higher and the music becomes more curious. Two men in the middle sequester and a plate mail covered man comes out, who is taller than all. He pulls out his sword from the scabbard and points it towards the twister as if alerting the nature. Soon the music softens for the time being. It starts raining all over in The Oxbow and silence reigns over the troop soaking up the noise of thunderclaps. Again the music thickens a bit and an image of a couple dancing in a snowy crystal ball covers the sight automatically. The pianist enjoys the music giving his soul all in. Then comes the mysterious part of the music with rapid chords, which feels as if anxiety and happiness are hugging you at the same time, like when you discover that Hogwarts actually exists. Rain, storm, thunder and the legion settles down and fog envelops the painting. The signature chord repeats, the one which caused the tornado but this time fog clears away. The music slows down promptly and turns soothing. There’s nothing like wet ground nor any trace of soldiers being there. However, the damage caused by the storm is perceptible at the natural wilderness. The sunlight poured on the land of Mt. Holyoke, Northampton and the Connecticut River Valley. A leaf floating in the air twirling and swinging falls down onto a painter’s hat, who gets distracted from his easel. The river continues flowing carrying along the hollow armor suits and will discharge them all at Long Island Sound. Two souls rise splitting the waves apart at the Oxbow and relishing the romantic music they trip the light fantastic on the surface of their forever residence. The music ends as the wave hits the shore of the island and water splashes into your face which undoubtedly feels like you have just woken up.

The couturier sniffs a couple of times, wipes her face with her delicate hands painted dark blue on the nails. She takes out her straightened dark black hair from under the shawl and holds it tight just above the crown of her head forming a ponytail. Then she twists the ponytail like a rope and clockwise pulls it around to form a bun and tucks the tail under it. She blindly rummages in the machine drawer for something and takes out a chopstick-like object which looks just like Hermione’s wand from Harry Potter movies. Raising her hand she shoves the wand harshly through hair bun towards her scalp, diagonally. The same length of the stick is visible at either side. Perfect. A lock of hair which unfastened while making a ponytail hangs on her shoulder so she tucks it behind her ear. She’s having morganite double-drop earrings on. She breathes in the salty air and then rearranges the shawl, pinning it on shoulders, for it doesn’t slide down. The hanging maroon fabric sways in the air just above the sweating floor, creating ripples in the shawl like the waves on the shore. She checks if everything is in place and stares out of the window towards the celestial moon, absorbing the white shine, her pupils expand. She keeps glaring at it as if warriors will be walking down from between the clouds anytime and she is ready for the battle. The battle of creating something that would change her life.

The rays reflect and reach onto a strange animal shaped thing in less than two seconds traveling more than four hundred thousand kilometers. Across that thing resting on a flat rectangular furniture piece, lady flops in the chair, resting her elbows on the armrests, mulling things over. All of a sudden, she straightens as if something has clicked hard in her brain and reaches out to invisible chain drawing it down with little or maybe no effort at all and with an actual sound of a click, the flickering yellow lamp comes to life. As the man-made brightness stirs with the natural moonlight, the steel plates of the machine burst a shine of glistening yellow sapphire. She strokes the mirror-like finished Featherweight faceplate, feeling the decoration of the scrollwork. The lady leans forward, reaches out to her legs for removing her shoes with stiletto heels. She throws her shoes behind her back which bangs loudly on the door. Then resting her head on the machine bed she starts wailing, but it is difficult to determine whether it’s pain or is about grief.
*
It brings the horrifying chills down the stomach when the pianist starts tickling the ivories, but soon the feeling settles down, spreading all across the veins. The soldiers entirely covered in a suit of armor forge down the path carrying shields and spears. Steadily the crowd moves in synchronization on the cultivated landscape of The Oxbow by Thomas Cole. After three similar pieces of notes, the chord tightens and builds some kind of tension as the dampers are moved away from the strings, which is indeed the work of Sustain Pedal. As a consequence, garrison loses the synchronization and goes haywire, knocking down each other which should not be the case. As the music continues, there expands a whirlwind over the uninhabited wild area of the precipice taking along the wastes of the jungle. The outer layer of the twister is the dust spiraling around the eyewall of the tornado and between them hide the leaves and limbs of the forest trees. The pianist tries hard to hold that music structure but the leaves, unfortunately, escape the outermost wall of dust and continue oscillating in the air. Wrinkles start appearing on his forehead and then distressed, he begins plunking away on the keyboard, so the music sounds boring now. In between the slow and sad chords he halts in midway with a loud bang. The pianist isn’t happy about it and remains bowed down, breathing heavily.

SNEAK PEEK 2

A door to the dark place opens with a loud creaking noise and the flooring seeps in the artificial bright shine. Before the light illuminates every corner of the shady room, the person shuts behind the entrance that emits the same creaking sound. A sudden thudding voice drills through the eardrums as if heels strike heavily on the stone floor and the sound reverberates in the almost empty room. The thumping continues for a while and with a dull blow, figure halts by the side of a chair.
*
There’re sheets of music notes clipped over piano’s music rack which is tilted that the pianist can look over it without having to shift his sight. The head of one paper reads ‘Harald’s Dream─ Originally composed and performed by Bogdan Alin Ota’ with a subtitle that suggests the album name─ Day of Wrath. He closes his eyes, trying to remember his ideal who indeed is Bogdan Ota and how he used to perform this magnificent piece. The pianist is practicing this one since he’d listened to it, not that he successfully made it to his desired audience by his work, or for that matter not anyone else’s composition, in fact, he failed. He is most determined now, that he vowed to successfully learn the art of playing this instrument.
*
She has wrapped herself in Cashmere Shawl, which is mostly made out of maroon Cashmere wool however, there are all sorts of colors in between. Also, Snowflakes’ pattern is knitted on it but each one of them is identical. The hanging fringes at the edges are dancing in the current of air passing through the narrow passageways created by tiny little strands, which are tightened at one end. She removes the shawl from her chest, taking off one end of it in her hand. She grasps the other end and like unfurling her concealed woolen wing, she sweeps the shawl to her height with a great force, whizzes loudly as it cuts through the speeding wind. The shawl blocks the sight of what lays beyond and quickly takes its steady form as she sits down on the chair.
*
The pianist rests his heels on the ground in the line of three pedals, the right foot is close to the rightmost pedal which is also called as Damper Pedal and left one is few inches apart from the Soft Pedal. He looks up at the empty ceiling, one more time reminiscing the picture of his Romanian ideal just before the hammers start hitting the piano strings as the pianist forces down his fingers and thumbs onto the black and white spread of the keys. He lifts up the toe of his right foot and depresses the Sustain Pedal, which sustains the notes for a time rhythmically connecting note to note, making more sense to the chords and eventually to the piece of music. Not long after, he elevates his toe from the Damper Pedal, but he performs the same when needed or is mentioned in the sheet music.

SNEAK PEEK 1

The floor’s sweating of the cold through the Kota stones and the window’s inviting the chilling breeze from the southwest which fills ears with whistles every now and then. The place smells of salty sea-shore scent. The orange sky’s transforming into violet with tiny white dots popping up here and there. The darkness is spilling into every corner of the room but the moonlight piercing through the window brightens a part of it.
*
An artist sits facing the musical instrument as if it was invented only for him, by Italian maker of musical instruments, Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco. The pianist owns a Steinway Grand Piano, seasoned wood body and thoroughly hand-crafted, which took it three whole years to lead its way for making history in the world of music. The pianist closes his eyes and raising his head, takes in the whiff of dried wood.
*
As the beam of moon rays shifts, the edges of bright light moderately takes a shape of the chair and soon the entire chair comes into sight. The chair has the appearance of being a traditional French Bergère style but its legs are taller than most Bergère chairs. It is a wooden chair having loose cushion seat with Bannister back. With that said, it is obvious that the chair is customized and not typical Bergère.
*
The pianist alters his position and shifts forward to the front half of the bench. It is wooden black, leather padded adjustable keyboard bench with four legs. The pianist slides his knees slightly under the keyboard. He slowly straightens his back and assures that his elbows are higher than the keyboard, then loosen his shoulders. He loosely rests his fingers on the keyboard forming a curve through fingers’ proximal to the fingertip.

REVIEW

Rise in Love is the story about two modern-day teenagers dealing with tough career choices and how they rise in love when they cross each other’s paths. The book is written in third person point of view, narrating the story of two distinct characters Adhira and Abhiraj. At the starting you imagine a young author is narrating the story but as the story develops you would refuse to consider that. That’s a good point. The writing style is really good, not missing any details that any reader would ask for. Well, at first the pace is a bit slow as you don’t see where it is going but after a few chapters it fits just perfect.

The story sets in two cities of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Nagpur. Adhira is a Mumbaiker while Abhiraj is from Nagpur. There are mentions of lavish places of Mumbai like hotels and malls and peaceful places of Nagpur also. The book depicts the lifestyle of a teenager in Mumbai and also of a teenager who is fighting for making his name in a career of his choice.

Characters are very strong and clear, all having a visible purpose. Abhiraj is trying to stay away from love and stuff, for concentrating on his writing career to prove himself to his father. Tulika is his best friend. Adhira is a gorgeous and extremely career-oriented girl, wants to take over her mother’s boutique and dealing with grievous past. Rashi is her best friend and her protector too, most fun and smart character. Adhira falls in love with Shubham who is a cool dude and son of a rich man.

The genre of this novel is romance made of pure love and emotions. When Abhiraj meets Adhira, he could not stop thinking about such a beautiful girl with sad eyes. Then they all become really good friends. Over the span of what little time they got, Adhira and Abhiraj shares their emotions and build a unique connection that they’ve never encountered and learn what is the true meaning of love.

The plot is all about how Abhiraj enters Adhira’s life and make her realize the difference between love and lust just when she needed to know. And Abhiraj who believed that love can only be a distraction, he found that it’s not true.

I loved how the author has depicted the teenage lives who are struggling along with family issues. Adhira, the strong is holding a traumatic past, whereas Abhiraj, the writer is making efforts to show his father that he can make his career as a successful writer. Also, there is humor that made me laugh. After the slow-paced part of the book when all characters get along, I could do nothing but finish reading it. It also reports some serious issues that deal with teenagers who get trapped with infatuation and ruin their lives. The author also speaks his opinions on a serious matter like rape through Abhiraj’s voice.

Apart from all the seriousness, the book is fun. It got me that Mumbai vibes and reminded me of those teenage years. The pure friendship and those moments with them. Making friends and creating the most beautiful and precious memories. Last but not least, the epilogue is the most satisfying part of the novel.

I recommend this book to everyone, teenagers, parents, readers of course.

Thank you to the author Siddharth Roy for creating Abhi, Adhira, Ra, Tulika. Also, for recommending Rise in Love to me.
