Chamaeleonaire
A Fantasy Fiction by Dhiraj Sindhi
Its
sparkling yellow eyeballs were staring strangely at opposite sides. All of a sudden
it lifted up its huge forepaws and moved to the left. There wasn’t any being
around the adjacent terrace, it glared down. The roof where it stood was much
higher than that one. The next moment, it leapt in the air and thrashed onto
the building. The loud knock confirmed, that structure shook wildly which must
have felt like an earthquake. Then, slowly it climbed on the parapet of that
roof, clasping the wall between its external and internal clusters of two and
three fingers. It didn’t face west, rather shifted its eye to the left corner
and another one automatically looked in the direction of east.
The daylight
was fading into the night as the sun approached skyline. There was nothing but
a window of neighboring apartment to the left. The interior was clearly visible
through the transparent glass; a little of doorway was visible at the corner
which led to another room. It stared for a long time before extending its black
leather-like textured and shiny as steel, lengthy tongue. It turned to face the
window as its hefty tongue shattered the glass and continued the course towards
doorway in a wavy motion. In that very moment followed by another bursting
noise, tongue reversed its course; all the birds fluttered from the street
wires beyond the building; it grasped a poor bird with the tip of its tongue.
A woman
descended on its stiff head and before it could swallow the unfortunate bird,
she cut the tongue using double bit axe she carried. Slashed out flesh along
with the bird fell deep into the ginnel. The creature choked and screamed and
climbed off the parapet. Meanwhile, the woman got off the creature and came in
front of it; her face turned pale as she saw fluid dripping from her friend’s
mouth. She wanted to caress it but her friend moved away. It could have flown
beyond the clouds but its crooked wings didn’t allow.
Not before
long, four helicopters surrounded their heads and the cops aimed their weapons
at Maya the Chameleonaire, Amaya’s friend. Amaya jumped on Maya’s head
immediately and unfastened her long white shrug and held it above her head. Considering
the signal, the chief cop using Fast-Roping came down from the aircraft, onto
the building. Maya slid down Amaya’s head and fastened the shrug quickly.
“You know
everything!” Amaya began, “Just look at her, what we have made of her. She does
not deserve it. She cannot fly, she cannot harm anymore and probably she wouldn’t
have done that had you provided with her meals.”
“We provided
with what we had!” Ahmed interrupted frowning vigorously and continued, “She’s
not alone there. How dare she escape the Crescent?”
“You forgot
what she had done for us?”
“She killed
that bird, and commands will remain same for everyone. She will be executed
tonight.”
That
statement stabbed Amaya at heart, she turned to face Maya and closed her eyes
firmly. Ahmed stood there expressionless. A few moments later, she opened her
eyes only to see that bird emerging from the ginnel beside. Immediately, she eyed
Ahmed with a raised eyebrow. Ahmed almost smiled and restrained.
“She’s
forgiven, but for now, she will be moved to higher security cell.” Ahmed
directed his troop towards the Crescent and shouted, “Get moving!”
