REVIEW

Summary

Sunset by the River by Sameer Saxena – a contemporary romantic thriller, can be seen as an eye-opener for the society we currently live in, where people don’t recognize mental health as essential as physical health, be it for stigma or lack of awareness and resources; at the same time the book –  with its simple, ordinary yet unique and special characters – is a paragon of Indian coming of age romance where the author sets out to tackle some very serious issues such as unethical faith healing, exorcism, challenges for psychiatry in India and so on; incorporating elements of love, laughter, agony, friendship, suspense, and contemporary romance, this book will keep you glued to flipping pages until no page is left unturned as it emanates immense pleasure and a sense of responsibility towards society.

Narration

Sunset by the River is narrated in third-person POV and for once it shifts to first-person POV when it is needed. The writing style is simple and consistent throughout the book, although the tone is exciting at times. The language is again comprehensible and could be read by anyone including beginners. Additionally, Sameer Saxena has succeeded in keeping the suspense.

Location, Setting, and Characters

The story is set in Delhi, Rajasthan and Japan of the years 2018-19. The story starts off in Japan, where Ayaan, the protagonist is working on his dream project. The story hooks the reader as soon as it starts when Ayaan receives several calls from India. Ayaan immediately returns to India and relates the past events of his life to his friend Hiteish before leaving. And so the story unfolds gradually. Ayaan, Monisha – Ayaan’s best friend and colleague, and Tripti – Monisha’s friend form a trio. The location and setting have an implicit effect on the characters, their behavior and it reflects in their lifestyle. Japan – where this ‘sunset’ from the title belongs to – has got one of the beautiful expositions to its account. Besides, there is one more place, which is of crucial importance to the plotline, has been described with extreme care, keeping it as realistic and neutral as possible, leaving it on readers to form an opinion.

Theme

Contemporary or coming of age romance could be considered as the central theme of this novel. The early career life and college life are portrayed simply, being careful not to exaggerate. The relationships between characters seem natural and quite relatable. Although the author tried not to overplay these ordinary characters there are instances with the cinematic touch, in a good way. There is another theme – mental health care in India – that holds great significance in this novel. It makes you aware of the current condition of psychiatry in India. The book also confronts exorcism and brings it into question for its ethicality, which, in some cases of healing practices doesn’t conform to. They are potentially dangerous and are not in line with ethical principles – autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Moreover, the theme goes on to convey a powerful message that is beneficial in all aspects.

Plot

The first half of the book narrates how the trio gets together as close friends, while the second half is a thriller that conveys the darker truths of society’s wretched perception towards mental illnesses and our mental healthcare system.

“Not a single person would tell their boss if they were having a panic attack, or they were feeling depressed, or they were experiencing any sort of anxiety. Because in our society, these symptoms are not considered as diseases; rather they are used slangs to bully."

My Views

When I started reading this book, I didn’t expect so many surprises and shocks. It was a pleasure reading the kind of romance this book captures. The best part about the book is that it’s not at all what you would assume it to be. It is really nice to see debut novelist breaking through numerous cliché romance tropes, which many popular Indian authors fail to do. Also, I commend the choice of subject the author has made to be addressed.

While the main characters were well developed, I felt that there could have been extensive roles to be played by the families involved, particularly Monisha’s character. Again, the length of the book felt short as I expect to see more of these characters and this fascinating story.

Happy Reading!

REVIEW

Summary

Stories of Us by Bobby Sachdeva, a collection of 41 short stories exploring a broad range of lives belonging to diverse social groups of varying wealth, power, status and race where the author directly questions the status quo regarding social, political and economic issues to make readers contemplate about the pressing subjects such as blind faith, discrimination, acquisitiveness and modern-day relations with some brilliant plotlines and some nebulous and abstract stories; strongly condemning our ways while sometimes offering values and ethics you may want to cultivate in your lives.

Narration

Stories of Us: The Common Man by Bobby Sachdeva depicts the struggles of the common man who has to constantly fight against the unscrupulous system. All short stories are narrated in third-person POV except a few. There is one symbolic illustration at the beginning of each story. At the end of the stories, Bobby Sachdeva asks thought-provoking questions to no one in particular but the society. The language is very easy and thus anyone can enjoy the book. The writing style is straightforward and consistent throughout the book.

Setting and Characters

Each story is set in different premises that are pretty much contemporary. The locations include India’s metro cities, villages and a couple of times a foreign country as well. Basically, the book captures the flaws in our society that we Indians intentionally or helplessly allow to exist. Many of the stories seem to reflect the oversimplified images of some characters just like we see in movies or TV shows but cannot be denied completely. There are many stories that follow families blindly adhering to godmen and superstitions without much rational thinking. While there are characters who share a complicated relationship with their families. Some characters are very focused on chasing money leaving behind their families and dreams. There are: fanatic leaders, RTI activist, parents, the only son of the family, eunuchs, daughters, rag pickers, garbage collectors, weak and poor, wealthy and powerful criminals and so on.

Theme

Based on the various themes, these stories can be categorized into 4-5 sections including faith & beliefs, family & relations, wealth & economy and discrimination & harassment.

Maximum number of stories were only focused on the godmen, blind faith, superstitions and unnecessary belief systems. Some of them are brilliant, delivering a strong message and addressing very specific affairs, whereas other stories are poorly executed with the same logic as others.

The second group of stories talks about relationship dynamics, hasty decisions, suspicion, work-life balance, internet affected families, parental expectations, unrelenting children and so on.

The third group involves stories regarding class consciousness, acquisitiveness, social responsibility, unlawful activities and other issues. Here, the author criticizes the government for abrupt implementation of laws after which the people are left alone to bear the consequences.

In the last group of stories, the author throws light on pressing issues like manual scavenging deaths (Do their lives don’t matter?), the life of eunuchs, molestation, threats to the safety of underprivileged & mentally ill people and so on.

My Opinion

Stories of Us raises the voice for the common man but on the contrary, some of the stories are very short and vaguely expressed that it fails to be effective enough. However, there are many stories that stand out from the rest having suitable and realistic plotlines to broach the subject we are turning deaf ears to. I would definitely recommend this to every Indian as it has the power of initiating the change.

I would like to share a few stories that moved me:

The story about attacks on RTI activists.

The story in which an exploiter financially debilitates a retired woman.

The story of humanity prevailing at the risk of a job.

The story depicting that a stray dog’s life is more valuable than an underprivileged girl.

REVIEW

Summary

Better Than Sex by Atima Mankotia─ a YA contemporary and family & relationships fiction is an outstanding and neatly-written book set amidst the hustle-bustle of a no-nonsense Indian wedding in seemingly perfect families where the author delves deeper into unforgettable and realistic characters to bring forth distinctive personalities, addressing subjects like gender identity, societal conventions, and complicated, unconventional relationships; all this with light-hearted humor and a mystery to keep you at the edge of your seat.

Narration

Better Than Sex is probably the most realistic book I’ve ever read in this genre. It is written in third-person POV following the main character Meenu, the bride. The story basically introduces you to the principal members of both the families. The narration is non-linear and to-the-point. The language is decorated with fine vocabulary and is efficient.

Location and Setting

The story takes place on a bus, driving the marriage party and the bride from Delhi to Chandigarh after the Vidai ceremony concludes. This entire book is a journey from dawn to dusk, briefly yet meticulously exploring characters with various backgrounds and past.  Even in this brief journey, Atima Mankotia has made the best out of it. Chandigarh and Delhi definitely influence the story in some sequences. Delhi University colleges, their culture, dating life of students and Fertilizer Company in Chandigarh are some of the setting-driven subjects. Otherwise, the story is highly influenced by the characters alone.

Theme & Characters

Family & relationships can be described as the main theme of this book. Family drama is not what you can find in this book, it’s free from any such exaggerated nonsense. After a woeful experience of the Vidai ceremony, Meenu is grappling with anxiousness around the strange people who just became her new family members all of a sudden. The fact that her mother, Kamlesh forgets to remind her a thing that she never fails to do when someone is leaving the house, adds up to Meenu’s anguish. Danny, the groom belongs to the Khullar family that has seen the days of struggle during the financial crisis. Roop, Danny’s aunt is portrayed as a formidable and an excellent woman of the household, who never compromises with the wellbeing of her family. On the other hand, Kamlesh, Meenu’s mother has suffered a lot due to her mother-in-law’s toxic behavior and establishes a joyful bond with her daughters-in-law. These families are perfect on the outside, but they have some really dark secrets concealed from each other. The author portrays how torturing it can be, having different sexual preferences than the majority. The book also displays how societal conventions and norms can abandon our simple basic physical needs. Additionally, it prompts readers to contemplate about the unconventional societal behaviors and intimate relations.

Plot

The non-linear narration gives insight into how these families function and how some characters contribute to their families. Mainly they are the influential women of the household. As Neena Gupta ji says in her book review, these are the quirky life stories that every woman will relate to. However, a significant part of the plot is driven by male characters also. As the story progresses, you will become aware of the fact that, you’re yet to discover the secrets. Simultaneously, you will crave the conflict to be settled down but it just won’t. The end is satisfying but I wanted more of it. I really wish there would be a sequel.

I forgot to mention 'sex'. Truly, there are many feelings that are definitely better than sex, you'll find out in this novel. But the book is much more than what the title might suggest.

My Opinion

I loved how Atima Mankotia has included so many remarkable characters and an effective plotline in this light read. Clearly, I didn’t want this to end. I didn’t find humor so compelling. Although, everything in this book is very relatable as we have attended at least one such Indian wedding. There are a couple of scenes that left an everlasting impression. I never felt bored while reading this book and it kept me to the edge of my seat until the end. It was indeed a fun read and I would recommend this to you all.

REVIEW

Narration

Finally, I am reviewing the first book I read in 2020. The Fragile Thread of Hope is a poignant and gritty tale of love, loss, death and grief that leaves you empty but the hope to hang from. The book is well-written with multiple third-person POVs which follow characters ─ Fiona, Soham, Sharon. The writing style is flowery and polished, you just keep reading until you choke off mid-sentence, left with moisty eyes. Also, the author Pankaj Giri has structured it brilliantly, providing the right scenes at the right times to make you sympathize with his characters.

Location and Setting

The Fragile Thread of Hope is set in Gangtok, Sikkim. The place so intimidating amidst the overwhelming views of mountains, rivers, streams and forests. Book also explores the megacity Bangalore, the ‘Silicon Valley of India’ where the author has portrayed the lifestyle of an IT worker which also reflected sort of bad workplace culture in this highly competitive corporate world.

Theme

The main theme of this book can be described as coping with the grief that you hold on to just because you fear to let it go. Apart from this, there are a lot of things Pankaj Giri has very successfully conveyed through his venerable characters like Father Francis and a Spiritual Master. All the characters in this book are perfectly written, they are exhaustive and hence sympathetic. Pankaj Giri has strongly put forward the concept of spirituality and a sensitive topic that is rarely discussed ─ religious conversion. Here he has elaborated the faith in Christianity with culture and customs. While talking about the culture, I should not forget about the significance represented here of Pahari Culture, some of which are accumulated from Nepali Culture.

Plot

I would be better off without talking much about the plot. Anyways, the plot will show you around the deep dark places lingering in your life that can strike hard anytime. It confronts you to the reality called Death and much darker feeling of grief which can only be overcome by Love.

Perhaps, this is what defines flawed people like me. Although tragedy moulds us, teaching us bitter lessons, traces of our typical faults linger in our souls, like ugly craters in the moon.

My Opinion

Well, what should I say about this incredible piece of literature? Let me provide you an excuse to read this book ─ there is no drama at all! I would suggest, grab a copy of this book if you want to read something intensively sentimental. It will change your perspectives. You’ll start to love your parents more. You will learn. Author Pankaj Giri has done a commendable job of extracting all the emotions out of readers. I loved this book and I highly recommend this book to anyone reading this right now.

Before we start, there are two options for you. You can either enjoy the video of the interview or read it here on the blog. Thanks to the author for recording the answers in the camera for you all readers! (Video is available with subtitles)

Let's Start!

Q: Why you chose this musical theme for your book?

A: I wanted to write a story about young millennials who come together and share their creative ideas, help each other out during their formative period and be emotionally available during your failures. Also, I'm a huge music fan and my brother is a musician, so yeah!

Q: The protagonist had many flaws yet your readers connected with the character and found very relatable, so what was the idea behind that character?

A: The protagonist here possesses the mindset of a lot of disturbed young millennials from our generation. So I decided to leave him that way. I think, he is more or less younger version of me. I remember having the same set of thoughts when I was younger and I remember this quote from my favorite authors, Anthony Doerr. A real diamond is never perfect.

Q: How important it is to follow passion according to you?

A: I think it's very important whether it's your daytime job or whether it's your secondary or tertiary passion. Passion is what keeps driving a life. Passion is important to make your reality better than your dreams. I wake up every morning knowing that I have so many things to look forward in life and they makes me happy.

Q: How is it being a writer in India and how was your experience publishing your debut novel?

A: I think it's a good time to be a writer in India. If you look around there are so many stories that need to be talk, there's a lot of culture and a lot of diversity. Yeah. I love being a writer in India. Coming to the second part of your question, how was your experience publishing your debut novel? I think it has been rather a very long journey for me. It was depressing in the beginning, a lot of publishers rejected me. But then again I met this wonderful literary agent Suhail Mathur from The Book Bakers literary agency. He helped me find a couple of publishers out of which Vishwakarma Publications came to my life and it has been an uphill journey ever since.

Q: What steps are you following for improving your language?

A: I must say, if you want to improve your language, you need to follow very good authors. In my case, I love reading books from Booker Prize shortlisted or Pulitzer Prize shortlisted authors, they write very well. But since I'm a contemporary fiction novelist, I love reading magazines, magazine interviews, I also watch Talk shows, they are very interesting and they help you improve your language.

Q: How’s been your journey so far as an author?

A: I think it has been a very good learning experience. I met a lot of new people, I met a lot of readers, I've learned a lot in just one month and the book is surprisingly doing well. I think I have to thank all my readers, I have to thank my publisher, I have to thank my literary agent, thank you so much. I'm starting to enjoy my success.

Q: You favorite book, author and genre and why?

A: I wish I could name any other book but my favorite book is Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. It's my favorite because there's very good character development in the book, I felt for the male lead, I could feel his pain and anguish throughout the book and it's one of the best examples of the good characterizations. Secondly my favorite author, I like Paulo Coelho who wrote 11 minutes, the kind of satisfaction I got when I read 11 minutes that I don't get from a lot of writers. And my favorite genre is modern classic because it has an artistic touch to it and is still set in familiar world.

Q: The most cliché romance plot you’ve ever read.

A: I once read about this novel where in, protagonist ends up in a mental hospital because he broke up with his girlfriend. I think its fine but then again the execution was very bad. And no, I didn't like it.

Q: 3 reasons why people should read your book ‘Bittersweet’?

A: Number 1: The thorough research done for the book. When you read the book, you'll see.
Number 2: Cultural diversity. There are characters from Kerala, characters from South India and Indo-Portuguese female lead and minor characters from the North-East.
And Number 3: There are a few surprises in the book.

Q: Three secrets about the book which readers don’t know yet.

A: Number 1: The book was written when I was a college student. I did my engineering in Coimbatore and that's when I completed the first draft of the book. It took some time for the book to get published.
Number 2: The Mumbai which you find in Bittersweet is an entirely fictional one. I have never been to Mumbai but I plan on visiting Mumbai soon.
Number 3: I maintain a colored chart for every book I write and in Bittersweet I used different colors to track flow of different characters and I did this primarily for shadow some of the characters and to help them throughout different chapters. I don't want some of my characters to go missing from chapters and that's why I used character chart using different colors. I think that's all. Thank You!

Thank you so much for being here Rajesh! We all wish you the best!

Show some love!!

REVIEW

Narration

Dramatic Daydreams of Miss Sodabottleopenerwala is the most inspiring & entertaining book with a whimsical sense of humour I’ve ever read. The book is narrated in first-person point of view which helps clearly understanding the protagonist Kira Sodabottleopenerwala. The writing style is simply amazing, contemporary style, highly relatable and consistent throughout the book, be it humour or emotion. Each chapter is followed by a quote, some humorous phrases and some inspiring ones.

Theme

Dramatic Daydreams of Miss Sodabottleopenerwala has a lot in store for a reader, especially who are writers and teenagers. Thanks to the author Tanvi Mayur Shah, the story has many aspects, although the book being as short as this. There is friendship, teen curiosity, the dearest of relationship we have with our granny, authoring a book, social media and being genuine. And definitely more.

The story mostly revolves around these five characters: Kira with her friends Shireen, Mishti, June and Nanu (Jannat Sodabottleopenerwala) the grandma. Shireen, Mishti and June might have played the same role only, that of a bestie but their characters are clearly differentiable with their behavior and opinions. Whereas Nanu played a significant role as a lovely mentor, not formal at all. While the other girls are doing something to make their summer vacation count, Kira Sodabottleopenerwala decides to author a book. Kira is a person who really thinks she’s not good at doing anything substantial. In the process, she learns about the publishing industry and wishes for making it to bestseller. Ultimately she wishes for glory, dramatic, yes. She got it all but in an unexpected way.

Apart from that, with this creative piece of writing humour poured in here and there very soberly and classically, like it was authentic and relatable. The things we have done and funny ideas we have once thought of, intentionally or otherwise also. I won’t give away much but one example is ‘Wrinkle Khanna and Poha Ali Khan’.

Quote from Dramatic Daydreams of Miss Sodabottleopenerwala by Tanvi Mayur Shah | Humour | Dhiraj Sindhi

"You don't need an idea. You just need some faith to begin working, some will to keep going and some enthusiasm to finish what you started."

My Views

First things first, Harry Potter and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah references were there, now you can imagine how much relatable it can get. I was totally into the book, full of ideas. It was motivating and inspiring to such level that, the night I finished reading the book, I simply couldn’t sleep and was literally thinking and planning my new day. Also, it gave an account of basics of writing and publishing which is really helpful. At some instances, the author Tanvi Mayur Shah talks about environment protection and hypocrisy.

The book is as entertaining as any comedy-drama. It conveys a very important message that no matter how much hatred we humans contain but it can never overpower the love and support. In the end, Kira achieves the sense of decision making and we learn that being your genuine self to yourself and the world is the only way to go.

Happy Reading!

REVIEW

Narration

Bittersweet is a piece of art, an art of storytelling through stirring thoughts, authentic dialogues, songs and a creative plot. Apart from that, Bittersweet is a work of contemporary fiction following the protagonist Roshan, who is an artiste with excellent songwriting skills and limited vocal talent. Bittersweet is narrated in first-person point of view and is narrated by Roshan only. The book is divided into two parts preceded by epigraphs. The writing style is really dope and complements the genre and overall theme. The opening passage is awe-inspiring which makes you dive right into an artiste’s bittersweet life.

Location and Setting

Bittersweet sets in Mumbai, that means opportunities. As for any artist, it is not logical to holdback ideas and staying in comfort zone, author Rajesh Konsam has taken a risk, developing a different theme, setting which promotes English song composition in the country of Bollywood. But that is not the issue here because we all love listening to them and for your better experience there are songs written by Roshan tainted with sorrow, heartbreak, and some nourished by joy warmth and love. Each song holds a different story and meaning, understanding which would take some time and I tried citing them rhythmically until I got its meaning otherwise it made no sense to me.

Theme

The novel introduces you to such many characters who are striving for their choice of career. A vocalist, a painter, an actress, a composer and a songwriter. These artists are looking for opportunities to showcase their talent and hope to succeed. Any type of art needs a source of strength and confidence which come from love, appreciation, & acceptance and if these sources are crashed it gets just gloomy, it may still be considered as a craft but there remains no space for improvement thus these sources need to get refilled time and again. This happens to the protagonist, he is still bound in chains of heartbreak & anger from past five years and is not able to forgive or forget. And before he can do any of that, his love of life returns and that’s where story starts. Author Rajesh Konsam has titled each chapter very correctly for example this first one ‘Beautiful Disaster’.

Plot

Roshan thinks he is the odd one out in every aspect of life and why not? You’ll discover that in this novel. Besides he’s got this very cool family (Mom and Dad), a boss like a sister (Sheryl) and a best friend Sunny. Ragini (ex-girlfriend) is the reason for his devastating condition. And then comes this girl (Shanaya) into his life who unlike Ragini respects and appreciates his art and brings sunshine to Roshan’s life. Roshan also reunites with his old friend Alston and they get along really well despite their past disputes. The first half depicts how Shanaya helps Roshan emerging from the dark and cold phase. The second part was totally unexpected, where you ride the roller coaster and you don’t know where you will end up. There are all sorts of twists and turns which I would crave for in any contemporary fiction, it just created a magical reading experience. And finally, the story ends on good terms.

"You can't just get a free ticket to stardom. You have to earn it the hard way, sweat it out every single day, fall time and again, stand on your feet. dust the dirt off and keep moving until you succeed. You need to keep surviving, remind yourself every day that clinging on to hope is the only strategy because hope is all you have when everything else is lost."

My Views

Let’s start from the beginning, as I mentioned above, an impressive opening is all you need to dive right into a book. It didn’t consume any time to get along with the narrative, also it is straight forward. Author Rajesh Konsam has made Bittersweet very relatable. Characters are really strong and dialogues on top of that help connecting us to them at such level that it brings you the same pain as them. I felt every bit of it. At first, I thought of it as an average read but the second part gave characters and the book itself a new life. There is not just the struggle one make as an artiste, they take almost life-changing decisions. And that’s what you learn from this book and for me, there is nothing of more value than these lessons. Roshan didn’t give up and Shanaya proved to be the best thing happened to his life. Not to forget, the music aspect of the book, it is the heart of Bittersweet. There are musical references from across the globe. There are experiences all related to music, there are failures, and there is romance! Character arcs of Roshan and Shanaya are way transformative, they grow together throughout the novel.

Closure! I loved how the book is filled with life and reality, especially the second part. Shanaya and Sheryl are my favorites from Bittersweet. The way they turn darkness into light every time they appear! The novel is a mixture of bitterness and sweetness of the same amount, no more no less!
